You do NOT have to stick with someone you have seen or been with for a long time, or who your friends chose. It is understandable to have mixed feelings on this matter. However, at the end of the day, you do not have to be worried about hurting any care provider's feelings in your decision-making process, as this is YOUR journey through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Choose the care provider YOU are most comfortable with and who you feel will benefit you most.
In my work as a birth doula, I am here to support my clients' choices of care providers. I am not here to influence their choices or sway them towards or against any type of care provider (midwife, obstetrician, or family doctor), and my opinions about specific care providers and the prenatal, birth, and postpartum care are kept to myself.
As a birth professional I am not partial - I work with those who want a midwife, others who prefer an obstetrician, and others who want their family doctor to accompany them. I even work with those in high risk pregnancy situations that necessitate special care from perinatologists! Regardless of who their care is with, I work with women (and their partners if they have one) to come up with potential decision-making scenarios, decision-making steps, and other tips for working with any care provider. We talk a lot prenatally about what YOUR desires, preferences, and plans are for your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum time. My job is to help you feel as prepared as you would like to be for your birth, and to be a valuable part of your overall birth team.
