If I had a chance to meet this little man or his parents once again any number of years from now, do you know what I'd remember? I wonder the same about each of my clients, including this family.
I would definitely remember how I met this boy's parents, and the discussions we had the first time I met them, about their past experiences and their hopes for this baby's upcoming "BIRTH-day". I would go on to recall how wonderful it was to be a witness to about half of this mother's pregnancy, her birth, and even how nice it was to visit a couple times postpartum (including holding this little guy at a week and a half! That new baby smell is amazing!). This pregnancy was eventful at times, just like many pregnancies are. I will remember my visits with this little one's parents, discussing all sorts of potential scenarios that related to this pregnancy and their coming birth. I will remember their birth with a genuine smile - the unique ways in which these parents connected with each other and bonded over the birth of their baby boy was so special to witness as their birth doula. The love for this little boy was so evident to me.
It was also special to watch as these parents made decisions. Decisions during this journey are not always easy for parents to make. There are so many things to think about and so many decisions to make over the course of time, that it can seem overwhelming at times sorting through all the options out there! Throughout my time as their birth doula, it was wonderful to watch this boy's parents make the decisions that were right for their family. I would never be able to forget that!
And if I didn't say it earlier, happy BIRTH-day!
